So you're on the hunt for a new gig. Whether you're looking to move up the corporate ladder, change industries, or simply find a job that's a better fit for your skillset, there's no denying that job searching can be a daunting task. Know what you want

Before you start applying for jobs willy-nilly, it's important to take some time to figure out exactly what you're looking for. What industry do you want to work in? In today's digital age, potential employers will almost certainly Google your name before extending an offer. Tailor your resume (and cover letter!)

No two job applications are alike, which means that each time you apply for a new position, you should take the time to tailor your resume (and cover letter) specifically for that role. Highlight the accomplishments and skills that are most relevant to the position you're applying for, and make sure everything is up-to-date and error-free—typos are a big no-no! Taking the extra time to ensure your application is tailored to each individual role will show potential employers that you're truly interested in the position and will increase your chances of landing an interview (and ultimately, the job).

Prepare for common interview questions (and practice!)

An interview is essentially a conversation between you and a potential employer—but unlike most conversations, there's usually quite a bit riding on it! Because interviews can be nerve-wracking experiences, it's important to go into them prepared by knowing what types of questions you might be asked and having answers ready ahead of time. And once you've got those answers down pat, practice them out loud until they feel natural—you don't want to sound like a robot reciting memorized answers during your actual interview!

Follow up after your interview

After an interview, it's always a good idea (and good manners!) to send a thank-you note expressing your appreciation for the opportunity and reaffirming your interest in the role. This simple gesture can go a long way towards making sure you stay top-of-mind with hiring managers as they move forward with their decision-making process—plus, it doesn't hurt to remind them how awesome you are one last time before they make their final choice!

Be patient (but not too patient)

Job searching can be frustrating—trust us, we know! But try not to let yourself get too discouraged if things aren't moving as quickly as you'd like them to; good things come to those who wait...within reason, of course!
